Rabies is a horrible infection that is 100% fatal if you start showing symptoms. It is usually transmitted to people through the bite of an infected mammal, though it can be passed through saliva or scratches from infected animals too.
You can get a rabies vaccine and this is a highly recommended form of travel vaccination that you should consider if you are going to an area of infection or risk.
Regardless of whether you had the jab, if you get bitten, licked or scratched by an animal whilst on holiday you should seek immediate medical attention – as we said at the beginning, as soon as symptoms start to show themselves, you are pretty much dead!
